Jita Baana

Biography:

The “wise guy” of Sampor elderdom, Jita Baana wandered the pathways of Sampor village during DKB visits, speaking Bom to unresponsive children, then mocking them for not understanding. As one of the oldest Sampor women—Jita was probably in her late seventies, at least, when we met her—Jita stayed in the village while others went out to work. She was ever-willing to stroll with DKB researcher Hannah Sarvasy, speaking Bom and engaging in poker-faced antics. She was one of the best Bom speakers of Sampor and starred as co-narrator of the Voice of America video segment on palm oil production in Sampor.
